Post by: sinnnn on July 05, 2010, 06:47:55 AM
Rob Thurman's new book- Chimera (loved it)  All his books make me think of Supernatural.  Its brothers going out for one another.  They take Family is Everything to a whole new level.  Love it.

Ellen Hopkins books. I've read Impulse (about 3 teenagers who attempted suicide and are staying in the same mental hospital), Crank/Glass (Fallout is coming in the fall, this series is amazing), and I'm currently reading Burned, which is about a Mormon girl who gets sent to live with her aunt, because she was dealing with alcohol and boys at school which is against her religion.

(LOL.  I don't remember saying I would put anything up that fine ass.  Or near it.  LOL)

Loved Watership Down.  Accidently threw the book in the trash at school.  Was on my lunch tray and I was running late for class.  I was so close to the end of that book to.

Another kids (more girl classic) was Are You There God? Its Ne Margaret.  That book had almost every girl doing the boob excercise and mantra "We must, We must, We must increase our bust."   Oh and the Babysitters Club series.  lol

Btw I usually listen to audio books, its so nice to be able to do other things while listening to a good book.

It HAS werewolves, as well as vampires and witches. It's called the Hollows by Kim Harrison. It's a sort of alternative earth where in the 50's60's genetic engineering created a virus called the Angel Virus that wiped out over half the human population. As it did so however it was noticed that certain parts of the population were immune. They were the witches, werewolves, and vampires (and assorted beings) that were living in secret, hiding from humanity.

While the reduced population made it impossible for them to hide like they once did they suddenly found their numbers about equal if they were to all band together against the humans. They didn't, but the fact that they could kept humanity from doing anything rash and allowed the world of the Hollows to develop with our modern world with the supernatural seamlessly integrated.

I primarily read it for Ivy, a living vampire (they are born with a virus that makes them vamps, and reanimates them once they die, at which point they no longer age, but also loose their soul) who is sexy on two legs, and has a sexual tension with the main character, her witch roommate Rachel that's just yummy.

As well as a strong part of my desire to be bit.  ;D

Post by: Bear on December 01, 2010, 11:08:00 PM
LOL,...well, will take a look Janine,..vampires are the have been and will be the "sexy" of the dark things that go bump in the night. I am trying to do some research on an idea,...looking for suggestions that might give me a seed of thought of how the psyche of a character"tainted"  might be, how other authors look at things. Have my been building own opinions in this case as I work at breaking a writers block,...and I get best I can describe as flashes of direction,...obvious by my question,...the focus here is involves werewolves.

Title: Re: Books, Books, and more Books
Post by: Janine Dee on December 02, 2010, 10:29:29 AM
And there are werewolves. They are simply called weres and they have their human and their wolf forms, but the wolf form is basically the same killos as their human form since their mass doesn't magically vanish.

I just love Ivy.  ;D

But the main character IS a witch, so that would be the most featured "type" but the representation seems fairly broad with Rachel meeting a wide variety. I know it's not the first book, I think it's the third, but a were character named David becomes a regular "cast" member and were issues DO come out.

A brief summary of one that threads across several books is their mating rate versus others, in that book the vamps as vamps CAN make a normal human into a vamp (though a socially low standing one) but a were must mate with a were to have children.

In that case David didn't WANT to have pups, but other weres were pushing because they considered it his responsibility.

Don't know if that would be the kind of issue that could come up for the story you are considering, but you could invert the idea of how can one connect if lycanthropy IS spread as easily as folklore indicates, etc, etc.

I dunno, I saw Kisten as "Ivy with a penis so it's okay to have sex." That's not to say that I didn't like the guy, but he always seems kind of puny. Under Piscary, under Ivy, under Rachel. He always felt like the runt character to me.

I saw the Jenks/Matlina thing developing after the spell to make him big. I guessed it reset his clock.

As far as what's next? It wouldn't be as fun to read if we could guess in advance.  ;D

I've read the books and I really like them, not sure how well they are translated to English or any other language but they're really good in Swedish. The movies are okay... though I don't really like the American version since the characters are changed a bit too much.

For Fantasy lovers, I'd recommend Lord of the Rings ofcourse, but for those that love thick books, with lots of twists, plots and turns over a course of 10 books, I'd advice the series of Terry Goodkind. I'm not sure what the title of the saga is, but translated from dutch, it would be "the ten laws of Magic'. I'm sure someone will add the saga's title in english if I got it wrong? :) thanks in advance

I probably come across as a real boring bookworm, I'm into all the Greek classics & Mythology, I like Shakespeare, Ibsen, Poe, Dickens, Jane Austen, Thomas Hardy, Bronte Sisters, but I love  fantasies too and have read all of the Lord of The Rings and the Hobbit and even Sylmarillion, my favorites are all the discworld series by Terry Pratchett, an English Children's Author I started out reading his kids books. No I didn't get out much, ok!

Dennis L. McKiernan's The Iron Tower  series is a good read for those that enjoyed LOTR,...
Donald Stephens Wound Land series would be a good compliment.

For a good laugh in a mythical world,... any of Piers Anthony works would be worth the time.

Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy though... still a great comical classic...

BTW when are they going to release towels for us here?

I'm an avid reader and I just finished The Lady's Tutor by Robin Schone

The buzz on Lady's Tutor was that it is sexually explicit, a very hot book. Romance is often a derivative genre and I wondered, as I opened it, what form this sizzling story would take. Would the writing be romantically sexy like Dara Joy? Would it border on erotica like Beatrice Small, Thea Devine or Susan Johnson? Would I read it compulsively and but feel depressed?

Silly me. The Lady's Tutor is a beautifully written and original story that takes its cues from no one. I swallowed it whole, sat up til 2:00 AM (most of the time with my hand in my panties) and would have been up until 4:00 if I'd been able. To me, this is one terrific book.

Nice Mollie you found this topic... and it's hot just to read your experiences while you read it :)

Yes Blue, I know the film.... great :) Also heard the book "The Restaurant at the End of the Universe".. ok.. not so good in my opinon.
But Douglas Adams also made 3 parts or the series "Dr. Who" which is great.

Alright, I'll confess.

I have finished all 3 fifty shades novels. I haven't followed Twilight , I'm told it's a spin-off, so I perhaps didn't get some of the "in" references.

They are badly written and don't go looking for sleazy BDSM content cos there isn't any, just a hint here and there peppered randomly. There is a romance running through, but the disjointedness (is that a real word?) shows through too much. I was caught once or twice by the "insights" into how some people (EL JAMES) think people fall into BDSM. I was looking for maybe a point of reference for myself, but didn't find any.
Why always this perception that to enjoy domination or being spanked, you must have been abused as a child? Neither my self nor my fiance fall into this stereotype.

I'm glad I read them on my Ipad and didn't pay the store price for them.

I'm a huge Terry Pratchett fan. All the disc world novels and I even read the stuff he wrote for young adults.
My favorite is the trilogy about Tiffany Aching, about a young witch in the making. He is funny, clever and gives you characters you really adore. and don't even get me started on the Nac Mac Feegle.

Terry makes fun and light of fantasy like Douglas Adams did with Sci fi.

p.s. I haven't read '50 shades'. I know many people who have with mixed reviews. So its on the list but not high

OMG, I didnt read your previous post on page 3. Did you read the bromeliad trilogy "truckers" " diggers" and "wings"? its young adult books.
It begins like "The Borrowers" but becomes this aweome sci fi thing, where this is NOT their home planet.

I just got a book from the library that I requested. It is an art book sooo... no words.
If you have seen my signature under my posts, that is the work of Bruce Timm. Seems he is an artist for Batman.
When I needed a siggy, hubby got me this pic and I asked where it came from because I loved the erotic but yet soft innocent style.
So now I have this book of artwork and I give this to Mr.Timm, His girls are not large chested like most comic artists, his girls look like girls.
And one of them inspired me for a story character.

He definately has a certain style. Check him out. I got it free in my library system
p.s. I lied. there are words. there is an introduction.

I thought of buying it, HB. But if I do I think I want an actual book, not electronic. Something I can go lie down with and read. Amazon has them used.

The Gorean Chronicles - John Norman.

Gor is the Counter-Earth setting for an extended series of sword and planet novels by author and philosophy professor John Norman.

The series is known for its content combining philosophy, erotica, and science fantasy.
It is known for its repeated depiction of sexual fantasies involving men abducting and physically and sexually brutalizing women, who grow to enjoy their submissive state. According to The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction, Norman's "sexual philosophy" is "widely detested" but the books have inspired a Gorean subculture.

The series has been variably referred to by publishers with several names including:
The Chronicles of Counter-Earth (Ballantine Books),
The Saga of Tarl Cabot (DAW Books),
Gorean Cycle (Tandem Books),
Gorean Chronicles (Masquerade Books),
Gorean Saga (Open Road Media),
and The Counter-Earth Saga (DAW Books, for novels with a protagonist other than Tarl Cabot).

The books in the series are known as The Scrolls among some members of the Gorean subculture.

Ok you have all seen the TV series  now read the  books

Game of thrones, its a great read though long  seven novels of 800 + pages, it tells a more complete story than the  TV series  ands is difficult to put down.  If you like medieval dramas  with some sex violence and magic thrown in  check them out. There is the usual  knights, goodies  baddies  and a whole gamut of characters all well developed  and fleshed out.

The Room Where It Happened ~~  By John Bolton Trump's former National Security Advisor

Vaughan and I are both reading this and we both feel the same way.

This man should have hired a ghost writer because he is a terrible author.  I did expect him to be a bit arrogant but he surpasses all expectations.

V may finish the book as he has more patience than I do....but I have closed the book and truly believe that I will have to be extremely bored with zero reading options before I open it again.

As a fellow Pratchett fan...favourites have to be the witches followed very closely by the Watch, could I suggest another English author you may enjoy Andrea?
Robert Rankin.  Similar to Pratchett but perhaps with a more steampunk/Victorian flavour.
The first book of his I discovered, I picked up on a train from Exeter to Manchester, it had been abandoned on a seat, and I loved it.
It was "Raiders Of The Lost Car Park". It's the second in the Cornelius Murphy trilogy, so I jumped in at the wrong place, but still enjoyed it.
Rankin has written many books, some in series, some stand alone. I haven't read everything, maybe 15 so far, but I've enjoyed each one.
Give him a try.

Talk about wrong part, my first Pratchett book was "Eric"
Which is like 9th down the list. But it proves that each story can stand alone.
