Here's a question I've pondered for many, many years. I've asked numerous people, from engineers to kids, and haven't gotten any satisfactory answers.
Where do Tires go?
I'm not talking about the tires you take off your car and throw away... we all know what happens to those.
I'm asking about the tread of the tire. The tread eventually wears down and you have bald tires. Where does that go? It can't be dust, because you would see tire dust along side the roads... and by now, a century later, there would be piles of the stuff.
It can't be integrated into the road surface, otherwise our roads would get thicker instead of thinner.

If you haven't seen the dwarfs lately, I found them. They were in some sort of parade. I didn't get to talk with them, but I did get to talk to Snow White and Dopey. Dopey didn't say much... he never does... but Snow White was quite talkative.
I sidled up next to Snow White as we were walking and I said to her. "Your dwarfs have another job in another far off land."
"Really?" Snow White replied.
"Yes." I said, "but they're well taken care of and they pretty much can do what they want."
"Oh," Snow White said, "well, that's good."
After a bit more conversation, with some kids butting in, I asked Snow White. "Do you know that those dwarfs can be pretty naughty at times."
A knowing smile came to her lips and Snow White said. "Oh, I know." And she gave me a wink, and said. "I bet you get naughty, too. Don't you."
I chuckled a little, then I asked Snow White if she would marry me.
My daughter piped in with a "DAD!"
So I said. "Well, wouldn't you like to have Snow White living in our home? We already know she's nice and she will make sure we all wash our hands before dinner."
Snow White laughed and said, "That is for certain."
Then Snow White was called away for some more photo ops with other people.

So there we were... standing in line waiting for our turn to take a ride though Small World..
And all I can think about is JemStar's post about having sex while on the ride.

And right in front of us is another family (I'm guessing they were a family) a Mom and her two young daughters. And Mom is looking good... and my mind starts to wander.
My kids had to nudge me out of my happy place and we board the boat behind the pretty Mom.

The boat goes through the various turns and we begin to enter the South America part. I can see Mother and her two daughers in the boat directly in front of us. My daughter is taking pictures of everything.

The pretty Mom turns in the boat to look behind her... spots us and waves... so I wave back... she waved again... I waved again. We made another turn and that was the last time I saw her.

How does it know?

Covems...
...there's a little genie that lives between the glass liner and the outside wall of thermos bottle. When something is poured into the thermos the genie senses its temperature and moves a hidden switch so the thermos bottle reacts accordingly.

If you break the glass liner, the genie escapes. That is why once the glass liner is broken, the thermos bottle no longer functions properly.

Part of my GaGaLand includes therapy on the mountains behind the ranch. These next pictures are for our nature loving Miss Sexilicious. Being a naturalist, I thought you might appreciate them, along with some of the others here in the village.
I went on a ride up to here.

On the ride up the mountain, the heat from the valley creates a draft that rises up the mountains. Our scent wafts ahead of us and most of the critters hide on our approach and remain unseen. Although I did spook some deer by the cascade. Mostly what you see is little chipmunks and squirrels... maybe a rabbit or two.
The way back down though is a different story, where you can sneak up on some of the wildlife. There's a bobcat in this picture, hiding in plain sight.

absolutely love them Covems :) which fact: the bald eagle a national symbol for the United States was almost extinct (one cause of this was DDT) but thanks to lots of efforts this majestic animal is now increasing more in numbers and more and more people are seeing this animal out in the wild again.

I believe this is a Canadian Lynx, but I'm not sure.
I'm quite sure she's a lynx and not a bobcat.
She has a shorter coat than the bobcat does, and she's larger and sleeker.

Setting the mood: It's a gray, chilly day here along the Jersey Shore. A stiff breeze is blowing up from the south, bringing rain. The air feels damp. I turn my collar up against the breeze as Terri and I make the short walk from our office building to my little car in the parking lot.
We buckle our seat belts and I start the Ford. Letting it warm up, I look over at Terri and say, "do you think this is a good idea? To meet someone from achat?"
"Sure," Terri replies, "we'll be in a crowded restaurant, with other people there. If all we see are dirt bags, we won't introduce ourselves to anyone."
I put the car in gear and drive us out of the lot. The time is 11:46 A.M., and I know the trip to the Windmill in Belmar will only take us about 6 minutes. It's an easy ride to get there, and I pull into the restaurant's parking lot.
"What do you think he drives?" Terri askes.
"Duh... a pickup truck," I answer, "what else would a cowboy drive?"
We look into the Windmill. There's large glass windows, so seeing inside is easily done. We don't see anyone who would fit Covems' description.
Since we're here for lunch, Terri and I get out of the car and go inside the building. It's warm inside, and the place has an aroma of good food cooking. Some cars come into the lot and people begin to enter the Windmill. The lunch crowd grows inside the restaurant and soon a line has formed at the order counter.
I notice a pickup truck pulling into the lot. My mind begins to wonder if that could be him.
"A truck," Terri says, "maybe it's him."
"We'll wait a little before we put our order in," I say, "in case it is, he can buy." We giggle a nervous giggle.
We both watch as a tall man gets out of the truck and strolls across the parking lot. He opens the door and catches Terri and I looking at him. I smile at him. He returns the smile with one of his own. I swear his blue eyes sparkled. Suddenly feeling shy, I'm at a loss for words.
Terri, however, is not, "Hi," she says to him, "are you Covems?"
"I could be ma'am," he replies, with a grin. "Who's asking?"
"We are." Terri says, looking at me.
For some reason, I still can't speak. I'm hoping that this is Covems, he's tall, good looking, and has captivated me with his eyes.
"Who's we?" He asks.
So Terri introduces us to this man, "I'm Terri and this is Pookie."
"I'm honored to meet you ladies," he says to us, "I believe I owe you two lunch."
So you can all see, that indeed it was Covems we met. We orderd our lunch, I had a burger with their cheese fries, Terri had a hot dog, with the cheese fries and Covems had two hot dogs, cheese fries and we all had a soda each.
It's funny, but we sat and chatted while we munched on our food and only once did the subject of achat come up, and that was very brief. We talked mostly about the area (the Jersey Shore) and Montana, and we laughed a lot. We also chatted about the upcoming holidays of Thanksgiving and Christmas.
I wish we would have had more time for lunch, because the conversation was so good. Terri and I agreed that we both enjoyed our meeting with Covems, and we hope enjoyed meeting us as well. We ended our lunch as Covems walked us to our car. We must have looked funny walking like that. He's so tall and Terri and I are both short... well... make that fun sized!!
Covems, thank you for lunch. It was delicious and very enjoyable. :)

"Oh my, look at that," were the thoughts that immediately came to mind as I watched a tall, good looking man getting out of a pickup truck. He was wearing faded blue jeans, a faded denim jacket and cowboy boots. I saw him reach into the truck door and take a cowboy hat, then he tossed the hat back inside before shutting the door, "that has to be him."
Pookie and I were at the Windmill restaurant in Belmar waiting to see if another member of achat would show up and buy us lunch.
I kept my eyes on this man as he casually walked across the parking lot towards the restaurant door. As he got closer, I could feel myself becoming excited. If it was Covems, this would be the first time I ever met another person from a social web site, and this was a good looking guy.
Finally, he opened the door to the Windmill and stepped inside. Pookie was silent, which is very rare for her. I wasn't, so I took up the mantle and started the conversation. I was so glad that this handsome cowboy was Covems.
We had an enjoyable lunch. Besides the food being so good, the company and the conversations were fun and very humorous. Covems likes to poke fun, and this was no exception. The first thing, after introductions, was for him to poke fun at our height.
We laughed a lot, chatting about almost everything, especially the Shore and his home in Montana, and the whole time he referred to us as Miss Pookie and Miss Terri. I loved the stories about his Mama! I can picture her whacking him with that wooden spoon for not taking his hat off inside her house.
Covems walked us to Pookie's car when we were finished with our lunch, and told us he would wait to make sure her car started and we were on our way.

The Showdown
One of the more enjoyable lunches I've had in quite a while. Two cute, young ladies (munchkins)... two Windmill hot dogs... cheese fries and a Pepsi. As they reported, we laughed a lot.... told stories... and just plain had a marvelous time.

Miss Pookie and Miss Terri are cute, funny, and charming. Of course, we kind of know each other, both from here and another social site that shall remain nameless. So it wasn't like we were total strangers, meeting for the first time. It was more like acquaintences that improved on their friendships, and that's a nice thing to have happen.
I was happy to buy the lunch.

Women always maintain that giving birth is way more painful than a guy getting kicked in the nuts. Well, after another beer (it was quite good), and some heavy deductive thinking, I have come up with the answer to that question.
Getting kicked in the nuts is more painful than having a baby; and here is the reason for my conclusion. A year or so after giving birth, a woman will often say, "It might be nice to have another child."
On the other hand, you never hear a guy say, "You know, I think I would like another kick in the nuts."
I rest my case. Time for another beer.

In the quiet moments I find the memories, special moments that a star may invoke. Some sweet, some bitter...some long hidden, lost by time but to suddenly sparkle in the mind for a moment.

here is a good one, me and a couple of friends, dropped Acid and hiked on trails that had been closed because of storm damage, we failed to notice the signs. :P
i recall at one point walking with a sheer wall of granite to my right and less then foot of washed out trail to my left..............over 200 ft above a raging river :o
Then we took the same trail back ;D
all of us shudder when the subject comes up today :'(

It was the summer of 74 i was 17 yo i was going with a Dutch girl of 21 who lived three houses up the road from my grandparents. Her father was typical Dutch i guess about 6'4” tall built like a brick shit house and as mean a bloke as i ever met. He worked as a sewerage contractor, but did it all by manual labour so he was a formidable man. He really didn’t like me at all so i kept out of his way. Anyway it was about 230 pm on a week day and we were at her parents house in her bedroom doing what young people do when there parents are working, things were going along nicely when we heard a car pull into the driveway
now her father drove down the driveway and turned around in the back yard which gave me the opportunity to put my pants on and grab my clothes and boots and beat a hasty retreat out the front door as he was entering the back door. They had a nice front garden a square of lawn with a white picket fence, being a smart bloke I chose to jump the fence, placing one foot on it and as I did the completer fence flattened to the ground. I didn’t slow down I ran across the road to the garage where my mate worked and ran into the storeroom with the picture of my mate doubled up with laughter as he realised what was going on.
Meanwhile the father had come through his front door like a bull at a gate slamming it open and finding his fence flattened and me vanished from sight.
It was a sight to behold this giant of a man standing on his footpath scratching his head trying to imagine exactly what had happened.
While 50 yards away hiding behind a car getting petrol kelvin my mate and I were watching him almost wetting ourselves with laughter.

I went on a day trip to London with family and friends and visited the crown jewels. I had a large bag containing picnic blankets and put it down by my feet whilst admiring the sparklies.
We wondered round then left, getting ready to move on to the next tourist attraction when I realised I had left the bag inside.
Suddenly there was a surge of people leaving and I was fighting my way through only to be confronted by a burley Beefeater.
"Bomb Scare" he explained all serious.
"But I've left my bag inside, " I explained and slowly ... reality dawned on us both.
I was the culprit who had cleared the building. I had such a dressing down which is quite difficult to take when surrounded by men dressed like the Queen of hearts from Alice in wonderland. I was just thankful I didn't have an Irish accent.

Yesterday I went on a trail ride with my train and a couple of my friends and we always race in fields and up hills.My mare is 24 years old and she beat 4 other horses, all younger than her.The one horse is a 6 year old Thoroughbred, another is a 10 year old Percheron/Friesian cross,another 19 year old Quarter Horse,and a 7 year old Appendix.We were all running flat out.In total we ran over a mile with breaks in between runs the longest run was a little over a quarter of a mile.
How fast can a Quarter Horse run flat out?

The current world record for a Quarter Horse going 220 yards, which is 1/8 of a mile, is :11.493 seconds. That works out to a mile in 1:31.94, which works out to a speed of 39.164 miles/hour.
The current world record for a Quarter Horse going 440 yards, which is a 1/4 of a mile, is :20.274 seconds. That works out to a mile in 1:21.096 seconds, which works out to a speed of 44.44 miles per hour.
Quarter horses can go 50 mph, the clocking times from the AQHA world records are started at a standstill, and that slows the overall speed (hence the reason a quarter mile time is faster than a eighth of a mile time). To accurately judge the top speed off of a race you would need to start timing while the horse was at top speed. to do this you can either take out the first 1/8th time, giving you a second 1/8th in 8.78equating to a mile in 1:10.24, making that horse running at 51.25 mph. Thoroughbreds times clocked at a running start for 1/8th of a mile are 9.60, equating to a mile in 1:16.80 and 46.87 mph. Obviously they can't hold this speed for the whole distance but these are legitimate top speeds. And you could probably coax another 1 mph out of them by promising carrots at the end of the run.

And you have to bear in mind that these are racehorses, which are conditioned and trained and shod for maximum speed, and they carry weights that are usually less than 130 pounds. Their jockeys ride in a crouched position that maximizes the horse's ability to go fast. Also, they are running over a track that is as flat and level as science can make it, with a surface that's groomed and conditioned to make it as safe and easy as possible for horses to run fast over it.
A normal riding horse with a normal rider isn't going to even come close to this rate of speed. They might be able to come close to 20-25 MPH, but that's going to be over a very short distance.
I have to add that Thoroughbreds at 2-year-olds in training sales have been clocked at times under 10 seconds for 1/8 of a mile at the pre-sale "under tack" shows. But this isn't a fair comparison with Quarter Horses in a race, because the Quarter Horses are breaking from a gate, starting from a standstill. The Thoroughbreds in the workout have a running start to the point where the clocker starts the timer.

The world record for a pacer is a mile in 1:49.3. That works out to 32.9 miles per hour at the pace.
The world record for a trotter is a mile in 1:50.1. That works out to 32.7 miles per hour at the trot.
Trotting and pacing are a horse's "second gear," and top harness race horses can go over 32 MPH in "second gear"!
I have a friend who trained harness race horses for 20 years, and she let me get in a jog cart behind some of the horses she trained. You don't go as fast in a jog cart as you do in a racing sulky, so I wasn't going as fast as the horse could go. But man oh man, was the wind whipping past my face as we went flying along!
This same friend put me up on a pacer just off the track that she was trying to find a home for. This was just the second time that horse had ever had someone on his back. We were on a training track out in Three Forks, MT, and he took off at a pace down the track. My friend was riding a lead pony at a good hand gallop, shouting and urging this pacer along. I know we weren't going anywhere near racing speed, but my god was it an experience! We were flying along at the pace, and I was laughing so hard I don't know how I managed to stay on.
A fast horse sure can feel a lot faster than when you're inside a car going the same speed, or faster. For sure.

Ok using Watts formula for horse power.....1 horse lifting (by wench) 33,000 pounds,one foot in one minute.
The average run of the mill mountain Gorilla weighs 600 pounds and can lift itself five feet into a tree in three seconds!
That works out to 45 horse power per Arm!, that's More HP than most compact cars on the road.

I got to talking with one of the park rangers. She was telling me all types of little trivia facts about the mountain, then she offered to show us something that not many visitors of the park get to see. It is something they like to keep hidden, so the trail to it is usually closed.
She took us around to see the back side of the mountain.

Made a pilgrimage up the mountain to the hunting cabin with my friend Two Feathers, to make some repairs to it. We loaded up a pack mule and wound our way along the trails on horseback. It's been hot as blazes here lately, but at night the temps fall into the 50's. It's been 50 degree temperature swings between day and night.

Spent a couple of nights up there, working on the cabin during the day and getting liquored up by the campfire during the nights. Now for the truly scary part... I had brought along some Jim Beam... not the expensive stuff but it was still magical.
Two Feathers pulled from his saddle bags a bottle of Malort. He said he wanted to see me puking my guts out again... which he did... but that's not the scary part of all of this...

The scary part is I was starting to get a liking for the evil stuff... well... at least until it decided to come back out...

So I'm in Trump Tower yesterday, attending to some business, when an announcement is made to evacuate the building. There was an unattended bag found, which was the cause for concern. I helped some folks along, until the NYPD officer took my place, then I went a got a cup of coffee.
The whole thing turn out to be no cause for alarm, as the unattended bag was in fact, just a bag of toys. When I heard that's what it was, this thought crossed my mind: "Hmmmm... I wonder if Brandybee is in town... "
I went on a day trip to London with family and friends and visited the crown jewels. I had a large bag containing picnic blankets and put it down by my feet whilst admiring the sparklies.
We wondered round then left, getting ready to move on to the next tourist attraction when I realised I had left the bag inside.
Suddenly there was a surge of people leaving and I was fighting my way through only to be confronted by a burley Beefeater.
"Bomb Scare" he explained all serious.
"But I've left my bag inside, " I explained and slowly ... reality dawned on us both.
I was the culprit who had cleared the building. I had such a dressing down which is quite difficult to take when surrounded by men dressed like the Queen of hearts from Alice in wonderland. I was just thankful I didn't have an Irish accent.

Hugs to you. I am alive and well, living a second cyber life. A little older, a little grayer, but definitely no wiser. Maybe a Budweiser, but that's a tale for a different day. It does give me a warm, fuzzy feeling to see that I haven't been totally forgotten, and I thank you for that.
I get a bit nostalgic from time to time (especially when the melancholies set in) as I search for my own Nepenthe. And I will admit that I wander into the Forum anonymously (with a paper bag over my head), and check up on you folk. That's because there is alway a draw to AChat and the many wonderful memories I have of the community, the loves, and the special friends I made there.
A few of those friends I have been able to find in the parallel universe that I roam these days.
