Title: Songs that touch you
Post by: analetta on July 17, 2020, 12:28:23 PM
This thread is for you to share songs that touch you...have some meaning for you.
They may be songs that inspire you to an action, to get involved with a cause, want to make a difference,  or just pick up the phone to reach a friend or loved one. Songs that awaken a memory of some person or event that you treasure. Songs that make you jump around the room or bring a tear of joy, pain or remembrance.
We all have a piece of music that has a place in our hearts.
I'd like to share some of mine with you.
If you would be kind enough to open your heart and share yours, I'd be grateful and very honoured.

I'll start the thread with what I think is a really beautiful song about the horrible disease, Alzheimers. My Grandfather suffered from this curse that slowly takes the person you know and love from you.
I'm not ashamed to tell you that I both cry and smile every time I hear it. I think it's a wonderfully tender and thoughtful observation of an awful disease and is beautifully written and performed.

This song was written by Marianne Sveen and inspired by Marianne's time as a nurse looking after a patient with Alzheimer's. She explained to The Mail On Sunday's You magazine that the lady's past was a mystery, and she seemingly had no family, "but when I put on music for her, she always tapped her feet in time and smiled. I used to invent my own stories about her, hoping that they were close to the truth."

This is "Lady Grey" by Katzenjammer

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8uTOKzE-uI&list=PLD_mYtxzSXnEuEcUM2gIkfOAk6hZx62Ag&index=6

Lady Grey
Katzenjammer

Lady Grey, you tell a smile
What is your secret, what's your lie?
You lived a long, hard life
Your memory may fade, but you're still wise
I wonder where you've been
What you've accomplished, what you've seen
In such a long, hard life
Did you ever dance, were you someone's wife?

Take me, take me away
Way back to the days when you were
Crazy, crazy for living
Oh, sweet twenty-nine
And you looked fine
You looked fine

Lady Grey, dressed up so nice
Where do you go when you close your eyes?
Do you hear the words I say
And can you remember yesterday?
What do you comprehend?
Can you even feel me in your head?
Lady Grey, with your knockout smile
Hoping you feel it was worth the while

Take me, take me away
Way back to the days when you were
Crazy, crazy for living
Oh sweet twenty-nine
And you looked fine

Lady Grey, no doubt that time
Has withered your hands, but still your smile
Is as sparkling as way back when
You broke the hearts of all young men
Lady Grey, when I see you now
Sick in your bed, but still you smile
When you hear the music play
Wonder how it would be if you could...

Take me, take me away
Way back to the days when you were
Crazy, crazy for living
Oh, sweet twenty-nine
And you looked fine

Katzenjammer are a female four-piece from Oslo, Norway comprising Solveig Heilo, Marianne Sveen, Turid Jørgensen and Anne Marit Bergheim. They took their name from the American cartoon strip The Katzenjammer Kids, which was first created by the German immigrant Rudolph Dirks in 1897 and is still popular in Scandinavia. Dirks was the first cartoonist to express dialogue in comic characters through the use of speech balloons.
The line up has changed since "Lady Grey". Marianne left the band in 2016 to pursue her own projects.

My Uncle died from AIDS (technically, complications from Pneumonia)
He was 5'11" and 200 pounds. Barrel chested like Captain Kirk
I saw him in Hospice when he looked like he only weighed 120 lbs, face gaunt, like death,
going in and out of consciousness. I actually prayed for his death, for his release. Every time I play this song I think of him.
The bad memories first, but then the good ones take over. I remember him as he was. I remember him from my youth.

Been an admirer of KT for as long as I can remember. Probably because my Dad would play her music nearly all the time.
Her voice, I think, is amazing. Haunting and soulful, joyous and lifting. It's an instrument she plays consummately.
This song is one of my favourites. I can't tell you why. It just saddens and makes me happy at the same time. I love it.

Eros Ramazzotti - Sei Un Pensiero Speciale

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZaF3TQv7ZA

Lasciati andare all'idea
Che niente e nessuno ci porterà via
Questo incredibile amore
Che insegue le stelle e rinasce col sole
Un incontro di sguardi
Un respiro profondo
Poi lasciarsi portare
Dal vento
Non è soltanto poesia
Ma è la tua vita
Che avvolge la mia
Un'alchimia naturale
Che rende perfetto
Anche un giorno normale
Ed io come uomo
Ti proteggerò
Dandoti il meglio che ho
Apro le ali
A una nuova esistenza
Che voglio passare con te
Mentre mi accorgo
Che nulla ha più senso
Se adesso il tuo abbraccio
Non c'è
Sei un pensiero speciale
Emozione e colore
Sei una notte orientale
La mia isola nel mare
Lasciati cullare dall'idea
Che è stato il destino
A trovare la via
Di due cammini diversi
Che visti dall'alto
Poi erano i nostri
Un incontro di sguardi
Un respiro profondo
Poi tuffarsi di nuovo
Nel mondo
Apro le ali
A una nuova esistenza
Che voglio passare con te
Mentre mi accorgo
Che nulla ha più senso
Se adesso il tuo abbraccio
Non c'è
Dietro ai tuoi occhi
C'è un'anima grande
Che vibra di pura energia
E sospinge lasciandomi dentro
Un calore
Che adesso non va più via
Sei un pensiero speciale
Emozione e colore
Sei una notte orientale
La mia isola nel mare
Lasciati andare all'idea
Che niente e nessuno ci porterà via
Questo incredibile amore
Che insegue le stelle e rinasce col sole
Rinasce col sole

Lana Del Rey - Dark Paradise

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmWUUPl8DD4

All my friends tell me I should move on
I'm lying in the ocean, singing your song
Ah, that's how you sing it
Loving you forever, can't be wrong
Even though you're not here, won't move on
Ah, that's how we play it
And there's no remedy for memory your face
Is like a melody, it won't leave my head
Your soul is hunting me and telling me
That everything is fine
But I wish I was dead
Every time I close my eyes
It's like a dark paradise
No one compares to you
I'm scared that you won't be waiting on the other side
Every time I close my eyes
It's like a dark paradise
No one compares to you
I'm scared that you won't be waiting on the other side
All my friends ask me why I stay strong
Tell 'em when you find true love it lives on
Ah, that's why I stay here
And there's no remedy for memory your face
Like a melody, it won't lift my head
Your soul is hunting me and telling me
That everything is fine
But I wish I was dead
Every time I close my eyes
It's like a dark paradise
No one compares to you
I'm scared that you won't be waiting on the other side
Every time I close my eyes
It's like a dark paradise
No one compares to you
But there's no you, except in my dreams tonight
Oh oh oh, ha ha ha
I don't wanna wake up from this tonight
Oh oh oh, ha ha ha
I don't wanna wake up from this tonight
There's no relief, I see you in my sleep
And everybody's rushing me, but I can feel you touching me
There's no release, I feel you in my dreams
Telling me I'm fine
Every time I close my eyes
It's like a dark paradise
No one compares to you
I'm scared that you won't be waiting on the other side
Every time I close my eyes
It's like a dark paradise
No one compares to you
But that there's no you, except in my dreams tonight
Oh oh oh, ha ha ha
I don't wanna wake up from this tonight
Oh oh oh, ha ha ha
I don't wanna wake up from this tonight

Of Monsters And Men    --    Alligator

                                                    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NunAl4BRVx8

“Alligator” carries the confusing yet beautiful tone the narrator experiences during her emotional awakening. Though the narrative is vague and disjointed, the song’s story appears to be written from the perspective of an “Alligator” who is laid in the river as her final resting place, only to be brought back to life as she is in her element for the first time. This resurrection causes her to confront the wildness inside of her and come to terms with her true identity as she lets go of the fear of accepting it. The disjointed images and sounds described in “Alligator” place an emphasis on emotion and perception over the external world. The entire song is written from the perspective of someone who is in the midst of an experience made up almost purely of emotional intensity.
While “Alligator” is an abstract song lyrically, it is not at all void of meaning. The lyrics paint a picture of the inner struggle between fear of the unknown inside of us and the acceptance of what we may uncover. That journey is communicated powerfully as the lyrics partner with both the music and vocals. Through the subtle narrative told primarily through emotions, Of Monsters and Men have given a song of victory over uncertainty and fear to their listeners. “Alligator” is the moment of triumph over one’s fear, frozen in time, and communicated in a kaleidoscope-esque fashion to remind us of what it feels like when we push off into the unknown in spite of our fear, in hope of something better.

Though dreams can be deceiving
Like faces are to hearts
They serve for sweet relieving
When fantasy and reality lie too far apart

So I stretch myself across like a bridge
And I pull you to the edge

And stand there waiting
Trying to attain
The end to satisfy the story
Shall I release you?
Must I release you?
As I rise to meet my glory

But my big secret—
Gonna hover over your life
Gonna keep you reaching
When I'm gone like yesterday
When I'm high like heaven
When I'm strong like music
'Cause I'm slow like honey and heavy with mood

The video, compiled entirely from old home movies — some shot by Wolfgang’s mom, Valerie Bertinelli — showcases Eddie as an adoring dad, with footage of him bottle-feeding baby Wolfie and showing him guitars and pianos before he could talk. It concludes with a heart-wrenching voicemail: “I’m just so happy to have you as my son, man. I’m so proud of you. I love you so much. Call me if you get a chance. I just want to hear your voice.”

Joan Baez  is a national treasure with a voice like an angel. Her rendition of this Scottish folk song written in the 1700's  has haunted me since i was a small child. A beautiful song but so sad, get a tissue ready.

Pearl Jam---  Just Breathe

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kuq7RYQ8Wa0

An intensely personal song,  I first heard,... well maybe not but ... better described, the first time I truly listened to the lyrics, while sitting bedside in hospice vigilance of a friend who literally passed in my arms a few hours later.

It reminds me with the epidemic,..social unrest, dodging asteroids...well we shouldn't need all that  to compel us to embrace each moment with those you love.

Yes, I understand that every life must end, uh-huh
As we sit alone, I know someday we must go, uh-huh
Oh I'm a lucky man, to count on both hands the ones I love
Some folks just have one, yeah, others, they've got none

Stay with me...
Let's just breathe...

Practiced on my sins, never gonna let me win, uh-huh
Under everything, just another human being, uh-huh
I don't wanna hurt, there's so much in this world to make me bleed

Stay with me
You're all I see...

Did I say that I need you?
Did I say that I want you?
Oh, if I didn't I'm a fool you see
No one knows this more than me

As I come clean...
I wonder everyday, as I look upon your face, uh-huh
Everything you gave
And nothing you would take, oh no

Nothing you would take
Everything you gave...

Did I say that I need you?
Oh, did I say that I want you?
Oh, if I didn't I'm a fool you see
No one knows this more than me
As I come clean, ah...

Nothing you would take
Everything you gave
Hold me 'til I die
Meet you on the other side...

The new song from Serj Tankian (some of you may know him from "System Of A Down").
Even though I've only listened to it 3 times so far it already resonates with meaning.

Naaaa.nana...nothing,

You blew you blew me baby out of the water bebe out of the water Bebe Dadadadadada
Naaa..nana..nothing,

I won’t be betrayed by you,
I won’t lie awake for today,
Right away,
I don’t need to pray to you
I don’t want to sacrifice my day, not this way.

Muppetmamuppetmuppet where are you going bebe , what are you saying Dadadadadadada
Naaaa.nana...nothing

You blew you blew me baby out of the water bebe out of the water Bebe Dadadadadada
Naaa..nana..nothing,

I won’t be afraid of you,
I won’t lie and beg for today,
Right away,
No more fun and games for you,
I don’t need to sacrifice my day, not this way.

Far and away, where the sorcerers have seen the lore,
Turning night into day,
With a fresh ratatouille of blood and gore,
Never will we tread on the weak and the frail,
Never will we switch the head for the tail,
Never will we drink the milk from her pail,
Never will we utter the word, Before.

Don’t you know revenge is upon the day,
Lovers have no remorse dancing right through the rains,

We must all kiss goodnight before they return again,
Bright esoteric lights for all of us but the vain,
No more searching for God when we are looking for the grains,
Rectifying the cross for the loss of the slain,
Now wipe the cane,

Far and away, where the sorcerers have seen the lore,
Turning night into day,
With a fresh ratatouille of blood and gore,
Never will we tread on the weak and the frail,
Never will we switch the head for the tail,
Never will we drink the milk from her pail,
Never will we utter the word, Before.

Don’t you know revenge is upon the day,
Lovers have no remorse dancing right through the rains,
We must all kiss goodnight before they return again,
Rectifying the cross for the loss of the slain,
Now wipe the cane.

A few years ago I had prearranged with the band to sing the lead vocal on a song played for the Father/daughter dance.

Nothing unusual as to the song it's been used at weddings by millions...but I wanted to sing it...and make the moment personal.

She still blames me for ruining her makeup that day.

This weekend I walked into the family room and saw my two year old granddaughter swirling and twirling in dance to whatever song was going through her head.

I walked by patted her on the head and commented "Preparing for the ball monkey?"

she looked up and raised her arms...said "Dance papa please."

So I gathered her into my arms , she wrpped aher little hand over my finger and we danced. We needed a song so I started to sing as we whirled about the room.

A couple stanzs in I caught a glimpse of her mother standing in awe with tears on her face at the kitchen doorway, It suddenly dawned on me,...the song,..the moment and how life had  blossomed into perfection.

The song....

This song I carry in my heart and mind for ever!

The Internationale-Pete Seeger

Music by: Pierre Degeyter, 1889;
Written by: Eugène Pottier, Paris, June 1871;
Eugène Pottier, was a refugee from the Paris Commune, who wrote the poem while in hiding in the aftermath of the massacre of the Communards. Pottier’s poem was only set to music in 1889, two years after his death, and published in 1894, and was virtually unknown until then, so it is very unlikely that he wrote an English version. He only lived briefly in England, spending most of his post-Commune exile in New York, Philadelphia, and Newark. He did a lot of work for the various socialist parties of the time in America, all of it in French and ran a French-language school.

The International
Arise ye workers from your slumbers
Arise ye prisoners of want
For reason in revolt now thunders
And at last ends the age of cant.
Away with all your superstitions
Servile masses arise, arise
We’ll change henceforth the old tradition
And spurn the dust to win the prize.

Refrain:
So comrades, come rally
And the last fight let us face
The Internationale unites the human race.

No more deluded by reaction
On tyrants only we’ll make war
The soldiers too will take strike action
They’ll break ranks and fight no more
And if those cannibals keep trying
To sacrifice us to their pride
They soon shall hear the bullets flying
We’ll shoot the generals on our own side.

No saviour from on high delivers
No faith have we in prince or peer
Our own right hand the chains must shiver
Chains of hatred, greed and fear
E’er the thieves will out with their booty
And give to all a happier lot.
Each at the forge must do their duty
And we’ll strike while the iron is hot.

Love Cat Stevens and was blessed to be able to see him before he was tagged as a risk on the no fly list and not allowed into this country.  Of course that has changed and he now goes by the name of Yusuf Islam.  One thing that has not changed is his amazing talent.  Tea for the Tillerman and  Teaser & the Firecat are my two fave albums by him.  It would be impossible to pick a favorite song, but this one touches me in a way that's been unforgettable since the first time I heard it.
