Artist's Alley / Height Map Tutorial for Texture Editing
« on: May 01, 2012, 09:04:26 PM »
This is my attempt at making a HM (Height Map) Tutorial.

I've never made a HM before but after playing around in Photoshop for a bit, I've determined a pretty easy way to get a basic HM started which can be tweaked into what looks best for your texture.

This is what my texture design looks like with the default AChat shirt HM:

  • Step 1: Open your .png texture in photoshop.
  • Step 2: Select FILTER > SKETCH > PHOTOCOPY... from the top menu

  • Step 3: Adjust the "DETAIL" slider to determine how much detail you want the HM (Hight Map) to detect. Adjust the "DARKNESS" slider to determine the obviousness of the hightened areas.

  • **TIP** White raises the surface, Black lowers the surface.
  • **TIP2** If you want to invert the appearance of your HM, select IMAGE > ADJUSTMENTS > INVERT

I chose this texture to use as the example piece since it's the easiest to compare the different HMs. I also have a very old version of Photoshop so I don't know if the newer versions are set up differently but I assume they should work in a similar fashion. If anyone has special tips or tricks with adjusting the HM, feel free to post it.

I just got a reply from Tom and he clarified his earlier post. He wants 3 creations total, not 3 from each artist. A creation may include multiple outfits only if they are part of a themed set. Once again, is there anyone else besides TightFit74 and Jeanona31 that have texture designs they want eligible for selection? If not, then does anyone have a preference on what outfits from which designer they would like to see available in the shop? Perhaps 1 from TightFit74, Jeanona31 and myself? Maybe by this weekend, we can make a decision on which textures we like and have them submitted to Tom for integration.

The winning New Clothing Idea for March is a tie between Bear's Collars & Chokers and NewGurl's Body Piercings! I will submit these results to Susy and hopefully we will see these clothing options available in the near future. Thank-you to everyone who submitted ideas and voted. If your idea was not selected, don't frown  :(, just suggest it when the next poll comes out.  :)

My interpritation was Tom meant 3 creations total, not 3 from each designer. This sounds more likely considering the fact that they are simply testing out this new process. Tight, I did raise that concern to Tom earlier and he confirmed that if we have an outfit "set", then it will count as 1 creation. (e.g. My 3 TRON outfits would count as 1 creation but sold individually in the shop).

If it's only 3 creations total, then my personal suggestion would be 1 creation from jeanona31, TightFit74, and myself since I haven't seen anyone else express an interest in publishing their designs with AChat.

A few people are suggesting we bypass the public voting option and allow the designers to pick their favorite outfits themselves. This would benifit everyone by speeding up the process so Tom and the rest of the team can get their hands on the textures sooner to make them available in the shop.

Can someone please upload few pictures of that new graphic details so we can get an idea of what are you talking about without installing the program?

The creators did post this image for you to compare the differences.

It's simple to download an install. If you don't like the changes, it's just as easy to switch back. Just follow the link in Tom's first post to download the installer or go to the page here: http://www.funnyadultgamesplay.com/download-achat/

I apologize for my absence lately. Due to some important projects that required my full attention, I had to step away for a while. I understand everyone is eager to begin this process of choosing our first clothing textures to be added to the shop. First step is to determine which artists want to participate. Depending on how many artists volunteer, we can decide how to approach a fair process to vote and choose which textures will be chosen by the forum.  Remember if you want to participate, that means you agree to Tom's terms:

- The creator's name can be displayed on the product picture, but otherwise the new cloth will be the property of AChat, and the creator cannot dispose of it in the future in any way.
- Free usage of the own design.
- 20% share in A$ after each sold item in the shop, paid e.g daily.
- As first step, we could select e.g. 3 creations from users, who accept the listed terms.

How an artist will display which texture designs they wish to be made available for voting will depend on who and how many artists decide to participate.  A suggestion would be each artist becoming the author of a new thread, the title would be their shop name and all designs can be put on display there along with a poll to determine their most popular design. Then the top voted designs from each artist can be combined into a new poll to see which top 3 favorite textures will be chosen for the shop. If you have any other suggestions, feel free to post them for discussion.

I agree to Tom's terms and volunteer to participate.  :)

Fate, there is another privately owned Massively Multi-User Reality Adult site that operates in a similar way that you just described. I doubt AChat has any intention to try and create a similar interactive environment like that one. They have focused more on the "private chat and intimate encounters" side of the adult gaming world which is the only one I've seen of it's kind. If they attempt to create a fully interactive world that can be explored with customizable environments/homes/etc, then they will begin competing with the other sites who already perfected that style of gameplay. It would be risky, dangerous and hazardous to the survival of AChat unless they found an original approach that clearly separates them from their competition. I'm not saying AChat doesn't have the potential to become what you described, I'm just suggesting that AChat may not want to pursue that particular path. That's just my opinion.  :)

Kieko I get the impression you are going to roll the developers threads over every 2 months (4-5 weeks for ideas then a poll) ?

At first I was thinking every month, at least for the clothing ideas since the amount of suggestions on that thread stacks up rather quickly. For the poses, perhaps they can go every 2 months before concluding with a poll at the end of the 2nd month.

Keiko, how did you think putting INTRODUCE YOURSELF under off-topic will work!? in my opinion, it will be a stand alone section.

I was just trying to suggest existing places for new sub boards to be created. Personally, I would like to see "Introduce Yourself" in it's own section at the very top of the forum (maybe right after Tom's "Rules")

last thing about EVENTS & CLUBS: reading how it will work, at last the "Erotic Fantasies" will be moved there or am i wrong!?

I always imagined "Erotic Fantasies" would be the place to host RP parties or share erotic stories, so it would stay where it already is. For "Events & Clubs," that would be a great place the NSPD could host their personal thread for members along with any other groups/factions that exist on AChat. (I know I've seen quite a few). Events could include holiday specific parties or contests.

Tom,

Speaking of bump maps, I often encountered an issue with the existing bump map of a specific style (in this example the "Cloth2/Waistcoat" for female) which would affect the texture I would upload. In this example you can see the bumps from the ruffles and straps are still visible when I upload a .png (I used plain white for this example) I assume these will be removed for the final product but it would be nice to have them removed during the previewing process so that editing the textures would be more accurate.

I am also guessing that Hentai was suggesting small surface bumps like these would be added to member-created textures like simple buttons, straps, etc so they won't appear so flat on the model. The UV maps of the texture shape is already provided and the shape of the breasts, abs, etc are mapped out but it would be nice to indicate specific places where the surface could be raised on those textures for buttons, straps, etc. I apologize if this sounds confusing, I'm not familiar with the correct terms for making model textures.  :)

1st Box: Texture
2nd Box: Bump Map
3rd Box: Bump Map applied to Texture

Welcome Back, Sinnnn,

It's interesting you brought up this topic now because nearly a year ago (only off about 4 days) the suggestion for AChat use on tablets was first made. I'll merge the two threads for you. I think technology has greatly improved since then (as it always does.) Perhaps AChat is more "tablet friendly" now.  :)
